Fairfield County Airport and S&S Aviation Celebrate Back-to-School with Discovery Flights
Airport celebrates SC Aviation Week August 15 –21 by flying rising seniors
Winnsboro, S.C. – Fairfield County Airport will celebrate back-to-school season and South Carolina Aviation Week
by providing discovery flights to two high school seniors on August 16 at the airport.
For the third year, Fairfield County Airport marks the return to classes by inviting two rising seniors to explore
aviation with a discovery flight, sponsored by S&S Aviation.
A discovery flight is where a certified flight instructor (CFI) introduces someone who has never flown to the field of
aviation and allows them to consider obtaining a private pilot’s license.
“Participants get to perform actual handling of the aircraft on the ground and in the sky,” said S&S Aviation Flight
School Manager CJ Baker.
Airport Director Denise Bryan, C.M., hosts this event each year to demonstrate the accessibility of aviation careers.
“Residents of Fairfield County have an airport in their backyard,” Bryan said. “Our event shows young people ready
to enter the workforce or continue their education that they have aviation career training opportunities close to home.”
Bryan hosts the event during South Carolina Aviation Week to showcase the airport among the local community.
“Aviation Week allows airports across the state to showcase their strengths,” said Bryan. “As a general aviation
facility, Fairfield County Airport truly connects with our local community by inviting students in to experience the
airport, flight, and career possibilities.”
Baker enjoys sharing his passion. “I love making people fall in love with flying,” he said.
The Winnsboro airport is publicly owned by Fairfield County. S&S Aviation, owned by Brian Steed, is the airport’s
fixed-base operator, providing flight instruction, testing, avionics and aircraft maintenance.
South Carolina Aviation Week is a statewide celebration of the economic and education impact of airports and the
aviation industry. Celebrated August 15 – 21, 2021 and centered around National Aviation Day on August 19,
Aviation Week is planned in partnership by South Carolina Aviation Association (SCAA) and S.C. Aeronautics
Commission.
SCAA actively promotes aviation growth through airport development and safety to meet air transportation and
