Yarnbombing in Ridgeway, SC
Contact: Brenda Lord-McGrew

Ridgeway South Carolina is going to be yarnbombed. Said to be spreading as a world-wide movement, yarnbombing is defined as a type of graffiti or street art that employs a colorful display of knitted or crocheted yarn or fiber.

St. Stephen’s Art and Fiber Guild and friends are hoping to cover 15 objects in downtown Ridgeway with knitted or crocheted yarn art. It will be part of the 12th Annual Arts on the Ridge Art Show & Sale on May 4th and 5th to celebrate the theme “Opening Doors to the Arts and Beauty of Small Town Life”

Guild Chair, Brenda Lord-McGrew explained, “Yarnbombing was started in 2005 as a movement in Houston, Texas, when a 37 year old retail boutique owner, Magda Sayeg, covered her door handle with a custom cozy to make her store more interesting. The goal of yarnbombing is to make a statement as to how important arts & crafts are to the community by covering sterile objects in urban areas with color and craft. The Happy Stitchers of St. Stephen’s Art and Fiber Guild hope to colorfully cover 15 objects on downtown Palmer Street…trees, lampposts, benches, road signs, rocking chairs, bike racks and more as part of the Arts on the Ridge festival.”

The downtown installation is planned for Sunday, April 29th, at 1:00 p.m. The Arts on the Ridge Art Show & Sale will be held May 4th and 5th, in downtown Ridgeway, South Carolina. The yarnbombing will be maintained through the month of May.

Donations of yarn can be made at Over The Top Boutique at 115 Palmer Street in Ridgeway.
